In Spades - Afghan Whigs (2017)

Disco molto bello.

Someone knows, now with the net you can immediately share the first reactions, and of course, if an album of the Afghan Whigs comes out, it's natural that I will gonna listen to it, expecting a big thing. To be clear, I've been listening to this band since 1990, when they released their second album "Up in It", and I saw them live in 1994. As often happens to me, the first listenings did not satisfy me, but when I decided to give it the definitely listening, I made up my mind. Greg Dulli's band, a guy who really has music in his blood, was initially included in the grunge movement, perhaps simply because after their debut "Big Top Halloween" in 1988, they signed up for Sub Pop, which released the following two albums (then they switched to Elektra); after their reunion, they came back to Sub Pop, who released this "In Spades", and the previous "Do to the Beast". It has always been said that this band had a distinctive feature, the fact of trying to blend rock and soul, and this continues today, making them up to date, today as then. Unlike the Black Keys, however, the Afghan Whigs do not sounds vintage, when you listening to them. All that being said, trying to contextualize a bit, the band from Cincinnati, Ohio, has a tremendous added value: Greg Dulli. Guitarist, gorgeous singer with an unforgettable and versatile timbre, producer, even lover of alcohol, cigarettes and also fpr the fights, genius and dissoluteness, but definitely a great artist with a pure talent for songwriting. Pitchfork, opening the review of this "In Spades", sums up the Afghan Whigs in this way: "Back in the 1990s, the Afghan Whigs were way ahead of the curve on what would become two of the most dominant tropes in 21st-century rock’n’roll: an open embrace of R&B on one hand, and widescreen Springsteen-sized epics on the other". Here, most of these two elements are due to Dulli. In this new "In Spades", we find all the greatness of the ancient Afghan Whigs, which even in 2017, sounds undoubtedly beautiful and enveloping. And it does not matter if the record lasts only 36 minutes, or if some melodies are very close to some of the Whigs themselves: the trademark is well-received until it becomes self-plagiarism. Very nice album.
