A Hero's Death - Fontaines D.C. (2020)

Un 8,1/10 da Pitchfork e una segnalazione di un amico meritano senza dubbio un approfondimento. Eccoci quindi a parlare dei Fontaines D.C., band etichettata come post-punk da Dublino (D.C. sta infatti per Dublin City, visto che Fontaines era un nome già "preso" da un'altra band di Los Angeles), Irlanda, che nel nome omaggia il personaggio di Johnny Fontane de Il Padrino. Un riferimento musicale è senz'altro quello degli Idles (con i quali sono stati in tour), ma qua siamo di fronte a un qualcosa di più poetico e leggermente meno militante, seppure, tanto per dirne una, il loro primo disco Dogrel del 2019, omaggia il Doggerel, uno stile poetico "del popolo" che risale al 1600. Il punk (sia pure post) si fonde con un gusto (sempre post) dark e new wave, tonalità che tendono al basso, andamento delle tracce che profuma di pogo e perfino di The Pogues, una band tra l'altro formatasi tra frequentatori del College musicale BIMMI di Dublino, ancora molto giovane, e quindi con margini di ulteriore miglioramento. Ci piacciono già, ma non poniamo limiti alla provvidenza.

So here we are talking about Fontaines D.C., a band labeled as post-punk from Dublin (D.C. stands for Dublin City, since Fontaines was a name already "taken" by another band from Los Angeles), Ireland, which in the name pays homage the character of Johnny Fontane from The Godfather. A musical reference is undoubtedly that of the Idles (with whom they have been on tour), but here we are faced with something more poetic and slightly less militant, even if, for one thing, their first Dogrel album of 2019 , pays homage to the Doggerel, a "people's" poetic style that dates back to 1600. Punk (albeit post) blends with a taste (always post) dark and new wave, tones that tend towards the bass, the course of the tracks that smells of pogo and even of The Pogues, a band formed among other people at the BIMMI Music College in Dublin, still very young, and therefore with room for further improvement. We already like them, but we don't put limits on providence.
