Parto dalla fine: forse non è dipeso dalla band, forse è stato il contorno, e proverò ad analizzare il tutto, ma questo concerto, di una band ottima, innovativa, impegnata, molto interessante, non mi ha convinto.
Li aspettavo da prima della pandemia; adesso sono qui, che dormicchiano sui divanetti del Bronson, poco dopo le 21, orario previsto per l'inizio del concerto o dell'apertura delle porte, o di entrambe le cose. Non tutti, ma tre di loro. Tre su cinque, perché la formazione si è ingrandita, a sorpresa. Si, adesso gli Algiers hanno due batterie. Passa un'ora e mezzo abbondante prima che si degnino di salire sul palco. Il pubblico, un po' alla volta, arriva. E' un pubblico molto variegato, e oserei dire che una buona metà sembra essere qui per puro caso. Dicevamo degli Algiers: abbondantemente dopo le 22,30 cominciano a suonare, direttamente sopra un pezzo di Laura Pausini, con Cleanse Your Guilt Here, una delle nove tracce (sulle 15 totali del concerto) che suoneranno da Shook, il loro nuovo album, che uscirà tra una settimana. Una scelta molto strana, ma dopo tutto, in linea con la politica di una band che certamente non si può definire, e alla quale non interessa minimamente, essere commerciale. Infatti, non sarà l'unica scelta del genere: ad esempio, nonostante fosse in scaletta, non eseguiranno The Underside of Power, una delle loro canzoni più belle, ma forse anche più famose. Insomma, agli Algiers non frega un cazzo. Tirano dritto, mescolando post punk, hip-hop, afrofolk, dub, free jazz, afrobeat, letteratura Southern Gothic, filosofia e Black Lives Matter. I loro brani sono complicati, difficili, e non si sognano neppure di semplificarli dal vivo. I suoni non sono perfetti, ma la voce di Franklin James Fisher è ottima, e pure i musicisti sono all'altezza e si danno un gran daffare. Eppure, il concerto sembra non decollare mai, il pubblico pare coinvolto solo nelle primissime file, e non vorrei che sia proprio questa la ragione per cui non suonano il loro miglior pezzo negli encore, nonostante fosse previsto. Gli Algiers si confermano una gran band, ma questo concerto non è stato granché nel suo complesso, nonostante quello che leggerete da altre parti.

Little by little, the public arrives. It's a very diverse audience, and I dare say a good half seem to be here by accident. We were talking about the Algiers: abundantly after 10.30 PM they start playing, directly over a track by Laura Pausini, with Cleanse Your Guilt Here, one of the nine tracks (out of the total 15 of the concert) that they will play from Shook, their new album, which it will be out in a week. The sounds are not perfect, but Franklin James Fisher's voice is excellent, and the musicians are also up to it and give themselves a great deal. Still, the concert never seems to get off the ground, the audience seems engaged only in the very first rows, and I'm afraid this could be the reason why they don't play their best track in the encores, even though it was expected. Algiers are still a great band, but this concert wasn't that great overall, despite what you'll read elsewhere.
