Karin Elisabeth Dreijer aka Fever Ray è tornata, e anche se sembra passato troppo tempo, stavolta, rispetto al precedente Plunge, sono corsi "solo" sei anni, anziché otto, quelli tra lo stesso Plunge ed il suo debutto omonimo. E, se ci pensate, sono pure pochi: nel mezzo c'è stata la pandemia, probabilmente un divorzio ed un esaurimento nervoso. Eppure, con tre album la musicista svedese, ha creato uno stile immediatamente riconoscibile e decisamente unico. I critici accreditati puntano l'attenzione sulle liriche, che riflettono sull'amore moderno in tutte le sue sfaccettature, mentre io voglio partire dall'ultima traccia, Bottom of the Ocean, sette minuti di vocalizzi e sintetizzatori dedicati alle balene, che nella mia mente fanno da parte 2 alla ormai leggendaria If I Had a Heart. Anche solo da una traccia come questa si possono trarre conclusioni decisive: la musica di Fever Ray è il pop contemporaneo di cui abbiamo bisogno. Queer, intellettuale, impegnato, romantico, moderno e perfino visionario, con un cuore tormentato ma grandissimo, e con una capacità incredibile di nascondere eccezionali melodie sotto tappeti spessi di synth. Grande.
Karin Elisabeth Dreijer aka Fever Ray are back, and even if it seems like too much time has passed, this time, compared to the previous Plunge, "only" six years have passed, instead of eight, between Plunge himself and his self-titled debut. And, if you think about it, there are too few: in between there was the pandemic, probably a divorce and a nervous breakdown. Yet, with three albums they created an instantly recognizable and decidedly unique style. Accredited critics focus their attention on the lyrics, which reflect on modern love in all its facets, while I want to start from the last track, Bottom of the Ocean, seven minutes of vocals and synthesizers dedicated to whales, which in my mind are part 2 of the now legendary If I Had a Heart. Even from just one track like this one can draw decisive conclusions: Fever Ray's music is the contemporary pop we need. Queer, intellectual, committed, romantic, modern and even visionary, with a tormented but huge heart, and with an incredible ability to hide exceptional melodies under thick carpets of synths. Great.
