Altro concerto rimandato per ben due anni, nel frattempo la band di Bristol ha fatto uscire ben due album. Ma adesso ci siamo. Stavolta mi muovo in treno, parto presto, e faccio in tempo a fare come piace ultimamente a me, riconoscendo che c'ho una certa età: una bella dormita nel pomeriggio. Ci troviamo con gli amici, che vengono da mezza Italia, e ceniamo nei pressi della venue: il buon cibo e la compagnia fanno quasi dimenticare il caldo quasi assurdo che fa. Ci perdiamo la band di apertura, da veri snob, ma al momento giusto siamo dentro.

Il momento atteso per due anni: si parte con Colossus, ed il pensiero va immediatamente al collega belga che me li ha fatti conoscere, quasi pregandomi non solo di ascoltarne la musica, ma di cercarli dal vivo. Ed è così, seppure si faccia fatica a spiegare quale sia la grandezza degli Idles dal vivo. Non sono dei fenomeni tecnicamente, non fanno niente che non si sia già ascoltato, niente che non si sia già visto (musicisti che suonano e cantano galleggiando sopra il pubblico, una grande carica sul palco seppure siamo lontani dalla dinamicità dei mai troppo rimpianti Dillinger Escape Plan), ma sono, questo si, persone che credono fermamente in alcune convinzioni, oggi un po' passate di moda, e lo manifestano fermamente, seppure in inglese, e si fanno capire. A volte sono piccole cose, come il plateale zittire i "buh" di una parte del pubblico quando citano casualmente la Francia durante una presentazione, da parte del cantante Joe, sottolineando che non esistono frontiere e che siamo tutti fratelli, a volte vere e proprie dichiarazioni politiche (non solo tutte le loro liriche, ma cito ad esempio l'introduzione di quello che, a distanza di anni, è ancora la loro canzone da me preferita, Danny Nedelko, sempre da parte di Joe: "this is for all the immigrants!"). Insomma, la loro gratitudine per essere presenti (sia noi che loro), la loro empatia sincera, il loro simpatico atteggiamento spesso clownesco, spensierato, il loro modo di vestire che denota assoluto disinteresse a qualsiasi tipo di moda, tutto, insieme al loro post-punk dritto, dinamico, danzereccio, grezzo e ruspante, ma estremamente onesto, li rende una delle migliori band live attualmente sulla piazza. Un'ora e mezzo abbondante, la scaletta la trovate qui, di un altro concerto che renderà questa estate 2022 difficile da dimenticare. Anche stavolta, chi non c'era non sa cosa si è perso.

The expected moment for two years: we start with Colossus, and my thoughts immediately go to the Belgian colleague who introduced me to them, almost begging me not only to listen to their music, but to look for them live. And so it is, even if it is difficult to explain what the greatness of the Idles live is. They are not technically phenomena, they do nothing that has not already been heard, nothing that has not already been seen (musicians who play and sing floating above the audience, a great charge on stage even if we are far from the dynamism of the never too regrets Dillinger Escape Plan), but they are, yes, people who firmly believe in certain beliefs, now a little out of fashion, and firmly manifest it, albeit in English, and make themselves understood. Sometimes it's small things, like the blatant call to silence of the "buh" of a part of the audience when they casually mention France during a presentation, by the singer Joe, underlining that there are no borders and that we are all brothers, sometimes real and proper political statements (not only all their lyrics, but I quote for example the introduction of what, years later, is still my favorite song, Danny Nedelko, again by Joe: "This is for all the immigrants!"). In short, their gratitude for being present (both us and them), their sincere empathy, their friendly, often clownish, carefree attitude, their way of dressing that denotes absolute disinterest in any type of fashion, everything, together with their post-punk squared, dynamic, almost to dance on, raw and free-range, but extremely honest, makes them one of the best live bands currently on the square.
