No pain. The world is a wonderful whisper for those who can listen, if necessary in silence.

Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was - Bright Eyes (2020)

I have certainly said it several times already, but I am obliged to repeat it to try to make you understand my judgment on every work of the band from Omaha, Nebraska, a creature of Conor Oberst: I can't stand his voice, nor his timbre nor his way to use it, with that vibrato often similar to a sheep bleat. That being said, we are on their tenth album, a folk that we could define as symphonic, there are many orchestral arrangements, at times even too pompous. An impressive guest list: Andy LeMaster, Jesca Hoop (vocals), Dan McCarthy (piano), Flea, Jenny Lee Lindberg (Warpaint) (bass), Jon Theodore (Mars Volta, QOTSA) (drums), Zack de la Rocha below the pseudonym of Kip Skitter (percussion), Vanessa Freebairn-Smith (cello), Alex Iles (trombone), and collaborators (at least another thirty to the various instruments on the various tracks), in addition to the three fixed members of the band, for a record undoubtedly valid and which demonstrates an important work done on a musical genre that needs variations in order not to repeat itself. Obviously a higher level songwriting: it is a pity that, as mentioned, I am personally disturbed by Oberst's voice, even if I understand it is one of the things that instills drama to the whole.
