No pain. The world is a wonderful whisper for those who can listen, if necessary in silence.

Fiori del male

Flowers of Evil - Ulver (2020)

The reflection on the latest work of the Norwegian "wolves" took me far. I try to summarize it, hoping not to bore you. Many bands and artists, over their long careers, have "mellowed" along the way; some to try to attract more listeners, others just to follow an instinctive musical path, some managing to combine both. Few have changed as profoundly as Ulver, and to see that there are still fans who accuse them of "selling out" just makes me smile, especially since the band themselves, for sure, won't be climbing the charts with this record. Having said that, what are we talking about? We are talking about a band (or a musician, Kristoffer Rygg, the only survivor of the original line-up, who has probably managed to change his collaborators over the years so that his idea of a musical path was shared) that started during the '90, from black metal, and today is releasing a record that I personally would define as classy dance music (here are the labels that have been used for their last period: synthpop, electronic dance music, art pop). A record of extraordinary beauty, if only you can remove all your preconceptions. You will find yourself dancing alone, in the middle of the living room, to the notes of Machine Gun and Peacock Feathers, guaranteed.
