Queens of the Summer Hotel - Aimee Mann (2021)
Mentre cominciavo a, diciamo così, fare le mie ricerche per scrivervi a proposito del decimo album di Aimee Elizabeth Mann, dimenticandomi quanti anni aveva, mi sono stupito un poco constatando che ne ha ben 61. Rileggendo le sue note biografiche e un recente articolo del Guardian dove parla anche di questo nuovo disco, scopro risvolti importanti e traumatici del suo passato, e che abbia fatto parte anche dei Ministry. Questo decimo album prende spunto anche dal libro Girl, Interrupted di Susanna Kaisen (molti conoscono il film che ne è stato tratto), e, come già in passato, affronta, a livello di liriche, la malattia mentale. A livello musicale è, come sempre, delizioso pop rock di grande classe, con arrangiamenti quasi jazz delicatissimi e raffinati. La sua voce ha ancora quella tonalità calda come un buon caffé. E' sempre un piacere ascoltarla.
As I began to, shall we say, do my research to write about Aimee Elizabeth Mann's tenth album, forgetting how old she was, I was a little surprised to find that she is 61. Rereading her biographical notes and a recent article in the Guardian where she also talks about this new album, I discover important and traumatic implications of her past, and that she was also part of Ministry. This tenth album is also inspired by the book Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaisen (many know the film that was made of it), and, as in the past, deals with mental illness at lyrics level. On a musical level, it is, as always, delightful high-class pop rock, with delicate and refined almost jazzy arrangements. Her voice still has that warm tone like good coffee. It is always a pleasure to listen to her.
