Il giornalista di New York City Ben Manalowitz riceve una telefonata da uno sconosciuto, Ty Shaw, che gli comunica che una delle sue tante avventure romantiche occasionali, Abilene "Abby" Shaw, è morta per un'apparente overdose di droga. Su insistenza di Ty, Ben vola nel West Texas per partecipare al funerale. Incontra la famiglia di Abby, composta dal fratello Ty, dalla madre Sharon, dalle sorelle Paris e Kansas City, dal fratello minore Mason (chiamato "El Stupido") e dalla nonna Carole. Ty informa quindi Ben che sospetta che Abby sia stata effettivamente assassinata, sostenendo con fermezza che non ha mai assunto droghe, e chiede a Ben di accompagnarlo per scoprire la verità e vendicarla. Dopo essersi consultato con la sua produttrice di podcast Eloise, Ben decide di aiutarli come parte di una storia che produrrà sul dolore e la negazione. (Wikipedia)
B. J. Novak ve lo ricorderete come il furbetto (ma non troppo) Ryan Howard di The Office versione US, ma in realtà, è un ottimo attore, uno stand-up comedian, nonché scrittore e sceneggiatore. Al suo debutto da regista, a mio modesto parere, ci regala una perla incredibile, secondo me ingiustamente sottovalutata da critica e pubblico. C'è l'essenza statunitense, la profonda differenza tra le grandi metropoli,in particolare New York e Los Angeles, e il resto degli States, soprattutto i cosiddetti red states, c'è una comicità davvero intelligente, e uno stile a metà tra Tarantino e Lynch. Un ottimo cast, che evidentemente si è divertito moltissimo a girare, completa il tutto. Recuperatelo e poi mi dite.
You will remember B. J. Novak as the crafty (but not too much) Ryan Howard from The Office US version, but in reality, he is an excellent actor, a stand-up comedian, as well as a writer and screenwriter. In his directorial debut, in my humble opinion, he gives us an incredible pearl, in my opinion unfairly undervalued by critics and audiences. There is the American essence, the profound difference between the big cities, especially New York and Los Angeles, and the rest of the States, especially the so-called red states, there is a really intelligent comedy, and a style halfway between Tarantino and Lynch. An excellent cast, who evidently had a lot of fun shooting, completes the whole thing. Get it and then tell me.
