Anna Kone e Maya Ishii-Peters sono migliori amiche, che vogliono fare tutto insieme, e stanno per iniziare la seconda media. Anna cerca di attirare l'attenzione della sua cotta Alex, mentre a Maya è fatto credere che Brandt e Dustin, i due ragazzi più carini a scuola, si siano entrambi innamorati di lei. Dopo che Maya ha scoperto che Brandt e Dustin le stavano solo giocando un crudele scherzo, etichettandola come "UGIS" (Ugliest Girl in School - la ragazza più brutta della scuola), convince suo fratello maggiore ad insegnarle come difendersi.
Leggera (ma anche crudele, come solo i bambini sanno essere) e spassosa (ma piena di verità) questa comedy pensata e recitata dalle due protagoniste (insieme a Sam Zvibleman), nei panni di loro stesse a 12/13 anni (cosa che ovviamente crea un effetto ancor più ridicolo e straniante). Fa molto ridere, e Maya e Anna sono travolgenti nella loro recitazione. Alcune curiosità: questo genere viene definito cringe, la comicità basata sull'imbarazzo sociale; Maya Erskine è in realtà proprio la figlia di Peter Erskine, batterista dei Weather Report (tra le altre cose), la vera madre Mutsuko interpreta la madre fittizia Yuki Ishii nella serie, mentre il padre fittizio Fred Peters, interpretato da Richard Karn, è un batterista di una cover band degli Steely Dan (band con la quale il vero Erskine ha collaborato).
Light (but also cruel, as only children can be) and hilarious (but full of truth) this comedy conceived and played by the two female protagonists (together with Sam Zvibleman), in the shoes of themselves at 12/13 years (which of course creates an even more ridiculous and alienating effect). It bring you a lot of laughs, and Maya and Anna are overwhelming in their acting. Some curiosities: this genre is called cringe, comedy based on social awkwardness; Maya Erskine is actually the daughter of Peter Erskine, drummer of Weather Report (among other things), her real mother Mutsuko plays the fictitious mother Yuki Ishii in the series, while the fictitious father Fred Peters, played by Richard Karn, is the drummer of a Steely Dan cover band (band with which the real Erskine has worked).
