Zeal & Ardor + Sooma, Circolo Magnolia (MI), 14 dicembre 2022

Mentre il Marocco perde con la Francia ai Mondiali di calcio del Qatar, al Magnolia, nel freddo milanese, c'è come al solito un'atmosfera rilassata, e più o meno in orario, gli svizzeri di Zurigo Sooma aprono la serata, con una musica che sporca di noise e punk un garage rock abbastanza prevedibile.

Ed arriva il momento della band di Manuel Gagneux, una delle band più interessanti che sono venute alla luce negli ultimi anni. Ricordiamo che l'idea musicale è unire il gospel o gli spirituals afro-americani al black metal, e quella filosofico/lirica è immaginare che "gli schiavi americani avessero abbracciato Satana anziché Gesù". Come dice lui stesso, dopo i primi tre brani della scaletta, stasera sono in 4 anziché in 6, perché i due cantanti di supporto sono malati, e la scelta sarebbe stata tra annullare il concerto, oppure arrangiarsi con qualche campionamento. Il pubblico reagisce con calore a questa e ad ogni seguente interazione del leader degli Zeal & Ardor, che si rivela simpaticissimo, con un nuovo taglio di capelli, e via via, sinceramente felice di questo concerto in terra italiana e della risposta del pubblico. Convincenti e coinvolgenti, vanno dritti per un'ora abbondante saccheggiando il loro ultimo album omonimo, e ripescando pezzi del loro non foltissimo repertorio. Dopo Devil Is Fine, dal loro album di debutto, ancora un Manuel divertito "chiede il permesso" al pubblico di saltare l'uscita dal palco ed il rientro per gli encore, ottenendo un'ovazione, e la band prosegue con altri quattro brani, per concludere con il singolo non contenuto in nessuno dei loro album Baphomet. Le diverse centinaia di spettatori se ne vanno, e se tutti la pensano come me, sono totalmente soddisfatti.

And the time comes for Manuel Gagneux's band, one of the most interesting bands that have come to light in recent years. We recall that the musical idea is to unite African-American gospel or spirituals with black metal, and the philosophical/lyrical one is to imagine that "the American slaves had embraced Satan instead of Jesus". As he himself says, after the first three songs of the setlist, tonight they are 4 instead of 6, because the two support singers are ill, and the choice would have been between canceling the concert, or making do with some sampling. The audience reacts warmly to this and to every subsequent interaction from the leader of Zeal & Ardor, who turns out to be very nice, with a new haircut, and gradually, sincerely happy with this concert in Italy and with the response from the audience. Convincing and engaging, they go straight for an abundant hour looting their latest self-titled album, and fishing out tracks from their not very large repertoire. After Devil Is Fine, from their debut album, still an amused Manuel "asks permission" to the audience to skip leaving the stage and coming back for the encore, getting an ovation, and the band continues with four other songs, to conclude with the single not contained in any of their albums Baphomet. The several hundred spectators leave, and if everyone thinks like me, they are totally satisfied.
