Home, Before and After - Regina Spektor (2022)

E così, Regina Spektor arriva al suo ottavo disco in studio, che esce a distanza di sei anni dal precedente Remember Us to Life. Non so se lei ci ha messo tanti anni come me, a capire che non voleva diventare né una musicista di culto, né una da mainstream, magari no, magari lei ha semplicemente continuato a fare quello che le pareva. Questo Home, Before and After (scritto però Home, before and after, a differenza di come vorrebbe la lingua inglese) è il solito viaggio teatrale nel mondo immaginario dell'artista, pieno di canzoni stratificate, piene di strumenti diversi, di arrangiamenti incredibilmente raffinati, di momenti sublimi e di altri che ricordano le ninne nanne o le filastrocche. E' affascinante mettersi all'ascolto e cercare di dargli un senso, ma anche non cercarlo. E stavolta, dopo l'ennesimo ascolto, ed in particolar modo dopo l'ascolto di quel piccolo capolavoro che è Loveology, ho concluso che secondo me dovrebbe provare finalmente a scrivere un musical. Potrebbe essere spettacolare.

And so, Regina Spektor arrives at her eighth studio album, which comes out six years after the previous Remember Us to Life. I don't know if it took her as many years as me to understand that she didn't want to become either a cult musician or a mainstream musician, maybe not, maybe she just kept doing what she wanted. This Home, Before and After (written however Home, before and after, unlike the English language would like) is the usual theatrical journey into the artist's imaginary world, full of layered songs, full of different instruments, of incredibly refined arrangements , of sublime moments and others that recall lullabies or nursery rhymes. It is fascinating to listen and try to make sense of it, but also not to look for it. And this time, after yet another listen, and especially after that little masterpiece that is Loveology, I concluded that in my opinion she should finally try to write a musical. It could be spectacular.
