Giudizio sintetico: si può vedere (3/5)
Wilfred Glendon è un botanico inglese ricco e di fama mondiale; si reca in Tibet alla ricerca della rarissima pianta selenotropica nota come mariphasa lupin lumina. Mentre è lì, viene attaccato e morso da una creatura, che in seguito si rivela essere un lupo mannaro, sebbene riesca ad acquisire un esemplare di mariphasa. Una volta tornato a casa a Londra, viene avvicinato da un collega botanico, il dottor Yogami, che afferma di averlo incontrato in Tibet mentre cercava anche lui la mariphasa. Yogami avverte Glendon che il morso di un lupo mannaro farebbe diventare anche lui un lupo mannaro, aggiungendo che la mariphasa è un antidoto temporaneo per la malattia.
Primo film hollywoodiano ad includere un lupo mannaro nella storia, apprezzabile soprattutto per "non usare motivazioni sovrannaturali bensì fantamedicinali", come notano correttamente Lattanzi e De Angelis su Fantafilm, ha sicuramente innescato un filone e lasciato un'eredità, ma sicuramente c'è stato di meglio a partire dai film seguenti, dove il cast fu più indovinato. In Italia fu intitolato Il segreto del Tibet.
The first Hollywood film to include a werewolf in history, appreciable above all for "not using supernatural motivations but phantom medicines", as Lattanzi and De Angelis correctly note on Fantafilm, has certainly triggered a trend and left a legacy, but certainly there was better, starting from the following films that involved a werewolf, where the cast was better guessed.
