Città gloriosa sbiadita

Faded Gloryville - Lindi Ortega (2015)

Pretty sure, it's hard not to fall in love with the voice that sings, on this record, "Someday Soon". Really hard.
Lindi Ortega, born in 1980, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, but now resides in Nashville, Tennessee, USA (where else could be?). Her Wiki-bio says (rightly, I must note), that her voice has been described as a blend of the voices of Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash and Emmylou Harris. 10 years as an independent into the Toronto music scene, a city that, like Austin, Texas, and as it made years ago Seattle, is proving its talent pool; described as "Toronto's best kept secret" and nicknamed "Indie Lindi", in that period brought out two albums and one EP, "The Taste of Forbidden Fruit" (2001), "Fall From Grace" (2007) and "Lindi Ortega EP" (2008). Descends from Mexican families (you could guess) and Irish (this a little less), and for a decade has been working in pizza places and flea markets, until, after which in 2008 he released another EP ("The Drifter") for Cherrytree/Interscope, she signed up for the Last Gang Records, and for them she brought out the beautiful "Little Red Boots" (2011), the EP "Tennessee Christmas" (2011), "Cigarettes & Truckstops"" (2012), "Tin Star" (2013), the collection "iTunes Session" (2014), and finally, this album we are going to talk about now, "Faded Gloryville", released in August of 2015.
We said. Beautiful voice. Then: great charm, although the girl seems fascinated more by truckers than hipster. We are definitely more close to the pure Country, than a generic Americana, as far as I can understand. The disc is great, delicate and well played. Well written with various kind of songs, albeit in a genre that is generally predictable: from the mid tempos as "Ashes", "Tell It Like It Is", "When You Ain't Home", to the quicker "Run-Down Neighborhood" and "Run Amuck", from ballads as "Half Moon", "Faded Gloryville" and the aforementioned "Someday Soon", to the two gems (in my opinion) of the disc, the bittersweet "I Ain't the Girl", it seems, at least from transport by which she sings, partly autobiographical, and the beautiful cover of the very classic from Bee Gees "To Love Somebody", already covered by Nina Simone, Michael Bolton, Michael Bublé and Jimmy Sommerville, the talent and the wonderful voice of the girl comes out.
