Obsidian - Paradise Lost (2020)

Lo so, sono molto old school.

Around the beginning of 2019, to simplify the operations of choosing the best 10 albums of the year, on my PC I created a subfolder, next to the one that contains the albums to be reviewed. I know, I'm very old school. It's called "Top 10"; at the moment, that of 2020 is still empty, either because, thanks to the pandemic quarantine, I have dedicated myself more to films and TV series, or because I have not reviewed, at the moment, noteworthy albums. Here: this Obsidian, the sixteenth studio album by the band from Halifax, UK, will be the first noteworthy. We will see if, during 2020, it will be outcasted from the top 10 positions. As everyone points out, including Wikipedia, Paradise Lost are considered pioneers of death / doom. Being a pioneer involves, over time, at least mastering the genre. This is what they do, in fact, despite their 32 years of history: the record in question does not denote old age, tiredness, contentment. On the contrary, clarity of ideas, perfection in composition, search for beauty, albeit with Gothic and decadent shades. An album that, if there was a metal school, could be used as a textbook, or at least as a definition of parameters.
