Celestial Blues - King Woman (2021)

Secondo album a nome King Woman, il progetto di Kris Esfandiari dove, a suo dire, si è ispirata fin dall'inizio dai suoi tentativi di abbandonare la sua educazione religiosa, un album davvero intenso, che si pone tra Lingua Ignota, Chelsea Wolfe versione heavy, e PJ Harvey 2.0. Stavolta pare sia partita da un'esperienza di quasi morte vissuta da bambina, ed inglobando nella riflessione la guerra spirituale, la rinascita personale e il paradiso perduto. Accompagnata dal chitarrista Peter Arensdorf e dal batterista Joseph Raygoza, Esfandiari ci prende per mano lungo un cammino oscuro, altalenando sussurri a grida, pescando a piene mani dallo sludge e dal doom metal, ma anche, a livello lirico, da ispirazioni colte come quella di John Milton su Paradise Lost, riducendola all'osso. Ancora una volta si rimane allibiti dinanzi alla versatilità di questa artista, e ci si domanda dove riuscirà a condurci, se la seguiremo.

Second album in the name of King Woman, Kris Esfandiari's project where, according to her, she was inspired from the beginning by her attempts to abandon her religious education, a really intense album, which is between Lingua Ignota, Chelsea Wolfe heavy version, and a sort of PJ Harvey 2.0. This time it seems to have started from a near-death experience lived as a child, and incorporating spiritual warfare, personal rebirth and lost paradise into the reflection. Accompanied by guitarist Peter Arensdorf and drummer Joseph Raygoza, Esfandiari takes us by the hand along a dark path, swinging whispers to shouts, fishing heavily from sludge and doom metal, but also, on a lyrical level, from cultured inspirations such as that of John Milton on Paradise Lost, cutting it down to the bone. Once again we are stunned by the versatility of this artist, and I wonder where she will be able to lead us, if we'll follow her.
