Avow / Hagbulbia - Portal (2021)

Oggi parliamo dei Portal, band di Brisbane, nel Queensland in Australia, una band che si esibisce mascherata e mantiene l'anonimato dei membri, ispirandosi all'horror di epoca vittoriana/edoardiana, o di inizio del 1900 (Lon Chaney su tutti) ed ai miti lovecraftiani. Fin qui non ci sarebbe nulla di troppo nuovo, se non che, passando alla musica, questa è veramente estrema: concordo con pop matters quando sostiene che in generale, il death metal finge di essere spaventoso, ma è innocuo, mentre la musica dei Portal è davvero terrificante (nel senso buono del termine). E' un death metal sperimentale che si fonde al black, alla ambient, con effetti sonori e un uso estremo della voce, il tutto teso a creare un'esperienza, appunto, quasi cinematografica dell'orrore. In questi primi mesi del 2021 sono già usciti con ben due album, Avow e Hagbulbia, che se amate il gusto della sfida, quello della musica che si spinge in territori davvero inesplorati, non vi lasceranno indifferenti.

Today we talk about Portal, a band from Brisbane, Queensland in Australia, a band that performs in disguise and maintains the anonymity of the members, inspired by the horror of the Victorian/Edwardian era, or early 1900s (Lon Chaney above all) and to the Lovecraftian myths. So far there would be nothing too new, except that, moving on to music, this is really extreme: I agree with pop matters when it says that in general, death metal pretends to be scary, but it is harmless, while the music of Portal it's really terrifying (in the good sense of the word). It is an experimental death metal that blends with black, ambient, with sound effects and an extreme use of the voice, all aimed at creating an almost cinematic experience of horror. In these first months of 2021 they have already released two albums, Avow and Hagbulbia, which if you love the taste of the challenge, that of music that goes into truly unexplored territories, will not leave you indifferent.
