Verloren - Withered (2021)

Fondati nel 2003 ad Atlanta, Georgia, da Mike Thompson (chitarra e voce) e Chris Freeman (chitarra e voce anche lui; abbandonerà poi nel 2009), sono al loro quinto album con questo Verloren. Ispirati nelle liriche da personaggi di un certo calibro (citano Nietszche, Jung, Bataille, de Sade, Arthur Machen, Aleister Crowley), pescano a piene mani dal death metal, dallo sludge, dal black e dal doom, e quel che ne risulta è un qualcosa che a volte li fa somigliare ai Pallbearer, ma certamente meno doom e più black/death, con qualche passaggio in blast beat e l'uso sporco della voce. Composizioni complesse, spesso lunghe, e uso atmosferico di un certo tipo di elettronica, che conferisce al tutto toni epici e vagamente esoterici. Niente male.

Inspired in the lyrics by characters of a certain caliber (they cite Nietszche, Jung, Bataille, de Sade, Arthur Machen, Aleister Crowley), they draw heavily from death metal, sludge, black and doom, and what results is something that sometimes makes them look like Pallbearer, but certainly less doom and more black/death, with some blast beat passages and harsh use of vocals. Complex compositions, often long, and atmospheric use of a certain type of electronics, which gives the whole epic and vaguely esoteric tones. Not bad.
