Pornographers of Sound: Live in NYC - Pig Destroyer (2021)

Oggi è una di quella giornate nelle quali faccio ammenda per non essere mai stato in grado di parlarvi dei Pig Destroyer, una sorta di istituzione grindcore, band formatasi nel 1997 ad Alexandria, Virginia, da J.R. Hayes alla voce, e da Scott Hull alla chitarra (un tipo particolare, che è stato coinvolto in decine di altre band e che, pensate un po', lavora come specialista informatico del governo), insieme al primo batterista John Evans (oggi la formazione è completata da Blake Harrison all'elettronica, Adam Jarvis alla batteria, e da Travis Stone al basso). Autori di sei dischi in studio, questo live uscito da poco documenta appunto un loro set a New York, con estratti da tutto il loro repertorio, ottimo quindi anche per chi non si è mai confrontato con loro. Potenti, provocativi ma coscienti politicamente, partono dal grindcore (del resto, si formarono dopo lo scioglimento di una band hardcore punk) ma inglobano tutto il meglio della musica estrema, dal thrash tendente al death, dallo sludge ai maestri del grindcore.

Today is one of those days when I make amends for never being able to tell you about Pig Destroyer, a kind of grindcore institution, a band formed in 1997 in Alexandria, Virginia, by J.R. Hayes on vocals, and Scott Hull on guitar (a particular guy who has been involved in dozens of other bands and who, just think, works as a government IT specialist), along with first drummer John Evans (now the lineup is completed by Blake Harrison on electronics, Adam Jarvis on drums, and Travis Stone on bass). Authors of six studio albums, this recently released live documents one of their sets in New York, with extracts from their entire repertoire, therefore excellent also for those who have never confronted them. Powerful, provocative but politically conscious, they start from grindcore (after all, they were formed after the dissolution of a hardcore punk band) but incorporate all the best of extreme music, from thrash tending to death, from sludge to the masters of grindcore.
