A View from the Top of the World - Dream Theater (2021)

Con una regolarità impressionante (ci sono sempre due, al massimo tre anni, tra un album e l'altro), che ricorda la loro musica del resto, arriva il quindicesimo album in studio per la band statunitense, formata nel 1985 da musicisti provenienti tutti dall'area di New York, ma che studiavano al Berklee di Boston, Massachusetts; i cambi di formazione li hanno portati ad avere un cantante canadese, James LaBrie, dal 1991. Cosa penso in generale dei Dream Theater, ve lo dissi in occasione del precedente Distance Over Time, e nonostante, come vi raccontavo proprio ieri in occasione del commento sul nuovo disco dei Cradle of Filth, i miei gusti musicali si siano modificati con l'anzianità, quando ascolto un disco dei campioni del progressive metal, non riesco a non storcere la bocca. Non riesco a scorgere grande originalità, dietro l'immensa tecnica strumentale, e a dispetto del fatto che la loro carriera sia cominciata poco dopo quella dei Queensryche, i Dream Theater non siano riusciti ad imporre la propria personalità fino in fondo, tanto da creare un marchio di fabbrica. Il disco, l'ennesimo, non è brutto, ed alcuni momenti sono grandiosi, con echi di Rush e perfino di Foreigner, ma come già ebbi a dire, terminati gli ascolti di rito per riuscire ad argomentare questo commento, di sicuro non sentirò l'impellente bisogno di tornare ad ascoltarlo.

With an impressive regularity (there are always two, at most three years, between one album and another), reminiscent of their music after all, comes the fifteenth studio album for the American band, formed in 1985 by musicians all from the New York area, but that were studying at Berklee in Boston, Massachusetts; the line-up changes have led them to have a Canadian singer, James LaBrie, since 1991. What I think in general of Dream Theater, I told you with my comments on the previous Distance Over Time, and despite, as I told you just yesterday during the comment on the new Cradle of Filth record, my musical tastes have changed with age, when I listen to a record of these progressive metal champions, I can't help but twist my mouth. I can't see great originality, behind the immense instrumental technique, and despite the fact that their career started shortly after that of Queensryche, Dream Theater have not been able to impose their personality to the end, so much so as to create a brand. The record, yet another, is not bad, and some moments are great, with echoes of Rush and even Foreigner, but as I already said, after the usual listening to be able to argue this comment, for sure I will not hear the urgent need to listen to it again.
