Self Loather - Ghost Bath (2021)

Curiosa la storia iniziale dei Ghost Bath, band proveniente da Minot, North Dakota: non si sa come, ma ai loro esordi si sparse la voce che provenissero Chongqing, Cina (la risposta del leader e cantante Dennis Mikula, quando gli fu chiesto perché la band non avesse corretto queste informazioni, fu "Ci siamo rifiutati di correggere le persone perché non vogliamo dare volti reali alla nostra musica. È nostro desiderio come band connettersi a tutti gli esseri umani"). Quarto album questo Self Loather, che come fanno notare i critici più attenti, nello stile ricorda ancora i Deafheaven di Sunbather, comunemente definito blackgaze (magari è ridondante, ma è l'ovvia fusione tra black metal e shoegaze). Nel caso non sapeste di cosa stiamo parlando, voce urlata al limite della possessione demoniaca, droni di chitarra molto melodici, tracce con parti velocissime alternate a rallentamenti doom, inserti melodici perfino di pianoforte. Il tutto piuttosto ben fatto ed eseguito, il che crea un'atmosfera vagamente horror.

Fourth album this Self Loather, which as the most attentive critics point out, in style still recalls Deafheaven's Sunbather, commonly called blackgaze (maybe it's redundant, but it's the obvious fusion between black metal and shoegaze). In case you don't know what we're talking about, screamed voice on the verge of demonic possession, very melodic guitar drones, tracks with very fast parts alternating with doom slowdowns, melodic inserts even of piano. All quite well done and executed, which creates a vaguely horror atmosphere.
