In molti siamo rimasti sorpresi dall'apprendere dell'uscita del nuovo album della band di Oakland, California. Riassumendo molto sommariamente, i precedenti di violenza domestica del membro fondatore Scott Kelly hanno portato al licenziamento dello stesso da parte della band nel 2019, sebbene i fatti non sarebbero venuti alla luce fino all'agosto 2022 per rispetto della privacy dei familiari di Kelly. Il licenziamento ha lasciato la band in pausa fino al 2026, quando, con una mossa azzeccatissima, c'è stata l'aggiunta del cantante/chitarrista Aaron Turner (ex Isis, attualmente porta avanti il progetto Sumac) e la pubblicazione, appunto, a sorpresa del loro dodicesimo album An Undying Love for a Burning World in marzo. Detto questo: già dal titolo, bellissimo, il lavoro si preannuncia interessante. L'ascolto lascia affascinati: suoni intriganti, accordature delle chitarre molto particolari, un ventagli di atmosfere e tonalità infinito, imponente nelle parti che lo richiedono, ricercatissimo in quelle progressive, pezzi che si snodano sinuosi e persino psichedelici, insomma, un discone in tutti i sensi. Non perdetelo, sarà uno dei dischi del 2026.

Many of us were surprised to learn of the Oakland, California, band's new album release. To put it very briefly, founding member Scott Kelly's history of domestic violence led to his dismissal from the band in 2019, though the facts wouldn't come to light until August 2022 out of respect for the privacy of Kelly's family. The dismissal left the band on hiatus until 2026, when, in a brilliant move, singer/guitarist Aaron Turner (formerly of Isis, currently fronting the project Sumac) joined the band and, indeed, the surprise release of their twelfth album, An Undying Love for a Burning World, in March. That said, the beautiful title alone promises to be an interesting one. It's captivating to listen to: intriguing sounds, unique guitar tunings, an infinite array of moods and tones, imposing in the parts that demand it, highly refined in the progressive ones, tracks that unfold sinuously and even psychedelic—in short, a great album in every sense. Don't miss it, it'll be one of the albums of 2026.
