Sometimes I Might Be Introvert - Little Simz (2021)

I cosiddetti critici accreditati, in questi giorni, stanno, chi più chi meno, esaltando tutti il nuovo disco di Little Simz, all'anagrafe Simbiatu Abisola Abiola Ajikawo detta Simbi, 27enne londinese di Islington, nata da famiglia nigeriana di etnia Yoruba, qua al suo quarto album. Mi sono quindi deciso all'ascolto, seppure debba confessare, ultimamente l'hip hop non mi dà più molto piacere. Va detto che, come capita spesso, mi trovo tutto sommato d'accordo con il giudizio di Pitchfork, che dà all'album un 7,7/10. A parte il filo conduttore lirico dell'album, come già introdotto dal titolo, la "lotta" tra l'artista a livello personale e tra la sua persona pubblica alle prese con un successo debordante, il disco ha pregi (molti) e difetti (molti meno, ma ci sono). Fin troppo lungo (19 tracce, oltre un'ora), riesce a mettere insieme hip hop di vario tipo, world music e sontuosi arrangiamenti orchestrali; probabilmente non perfettamente in ogni traccia, il che lo rende spesso troppo eterogeneo, ma potenzialmente superiore a gran parte delle produzioni in questo campo. Sicuramente interessante.

The so-called accredited critics, in these days, are, more or less, all extolling the new album by Little Simz, at the registry office Simbiatu Abisola Abiola Ajikawo known as Simbi, 27-year-old Londoner from Islington, born to a Nigerian family of Yoruba ethnicity, here at her fourth album. So I decided to listen, even if I have to confess, lately hip hop doesn't give me much pleasure anymore. It must be said that, as often happens, I find myself in agreement with Pitchfork's judgment, which gives the album a 7,7/10. Apart from the lyrical thread of the album, as already introduced by the title, the "struggle" between the artist on a personal level and between her public person struggling with an overwhelming success, the disc has strengths (many) and defects (much less, but there are). Far too long (19 tracks, over an hour), Simbi manages to put together hip hop of various kinds, world music and sumptuous orchestral arrangements; probably not perfectly in every track, which often makes it too heterogeneous, but potentially superior to most productions in this field. Certainly interesting.
