Local Valley - José González (2021)

Quarto album per José González, cantautore e chitarrista svedese, di chiare origini latino americane: i suoi genitori (all'epoca studenti e attivisti politici), con la sua sorella maggiore, nel 1976 lasciarono l'Argentina sull'orlo del regime militare, per stabilirsi nei sobborghi di Göteborg, in Svezia. Proprio lì lui è nato, un paio d'anni dopo. Si appassiona alla musica da molto giovane, suona in un paio di band hardcore punk, poi si dà una calmata e passa alla musica folk (ci sentirete moltissimo i norvegesi Kings of Convenience), rimembrando i suoi ascolti da giovanissimo, su tutti il cubano Silvio Rodríguez. Gli piacciono le cover, ve ne parlai brevissimamente anni fa in occasione del suo secondo album, dove c'era una stupenda versione di Teardrop dei Massive Attack, ma stavolta, oltre che inserire per la prima volta liriche in castigliano, le scelte sono davvero particolari: En Stund Pâ Jorden della concittadina Laleh Pourkarim, Line of Fire della sua band precedente, i Junip. Lo stile è un folk che però ingloba elementi di musica araba, creando un effetto quasi di world music, a tratti, la voce delicatissima, le tracce ben scritte.

Fourth album for José González, Swedish singer-songwriter and guitarist, of clear Latin American origins: his parents (at the time students and political activists), with his older sister, left Argentina on the brink of military regime in 1976, to settle in the suburbs of Gothenburg, Sweden. It was there he was born, a couple of years later. He became passionate about music from a very young age, he played in a couple of hardcore punk bands, then he calmed down and moved on to folk music (you will hear also the Norwegian Kings of Convenience, in his music), remembering his listening at a very young age, above all the Cuban Silvio Rodríguez. He likes covers, I told you about them very briefly years ago on the occasion of his second album, where there was a wonderful version of Teardrop by Massive Attack, but this time, in addition to inserting lyrics in Castilian for the first time, the choices are really special: En Stund Pâ Jorden from fellow citizen Laleh Pourkarim, Line of Fire from his previous band, Junip. The style is a folk one that, however, incorporates elements of Arabic music, creating an effect almost of world music, at times, the very delicate voice, the well-written tracks.
