One Rose

Xenia Rubinos was born in Hartford, Connecticut, 36 years ago, to a Puerto Rican mother and a Cuban father. She studies jazz composition at Berklee in Boston, and she spends most of her 20 years taking care of her father, who is suffering from a degenerative disease. In 2006 she moved to Brooklyn. In 2013 Magic Trix comes out, self-produced, and in 2016 Black Terry Cat, which gives it a certain notoriety. This Una Rosa is therefore her third album, and it must be said that there is certainly not only jazz in her music. Being the first time I listen to this musician, and having chosen her completely randomly, reading as usual the list of the 2021 releases, just intrigued by her name, I must say that I was lucky. The comparison with Esperanza Spalding comes out spontaneously: Rubinos' music is complicated but much, much more usable than Spalding's, more mixed with a lot of other influences (classical composers like Prokofiev and Ravel but also Latin rhythms such as salsa, rumba and merengue, as well as hip hop and RNB, not forgetting Miles Davis), and definitely more catchy. But beware, we are not even in front of an artist who only thinks about (as they used to say) "climbing the charts". Really intriguing (in some passages she makes me think of Arca), try it.
