Hold the Girl - Rina Sawayama (2022)

Devo essere onesto: ho preferito il disco precedente, che poi era il debutto. Semplicemente perché, a mio giudizio, il melting pot musicale che la avvenente cantautrice e modella nippo-inglese, in quella occasione inglobava un po' più di metal, rispetto a quello che risulta in questo Hold the Girl. E' innegabile che la ragazza riesca a scrivere sempre canzoni molto orecchiabili e accattivanti, ma stavolta, dal calderone delle sue influenze, ha pescato di preferenza da ABBA, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Celine Dion, Kelly Clarkson, come pure da Queen, Avril Lavigne e Gwen Stefani, e molto meno dai Korn. Non stupitevi se, ascoltando Hold the Girl, vi ritroverete a pensare "dove l'ho già sentita questa?": è del tutto normale, la musica di Sawayama è una sorta di mash up pop, con delle liriche che provano ad essere un minimo impegnate, come il suo attivismo LGBTQ+.

I have to be honest: I preferred the previous album, which was the debut. Simply because, in my opinion, the musical melting pot that the attractive Japanese-English singer-songwriter and model, on that occasion incorporated a little more metal than what results in this Hold the Girl. It is undeniable that the girl always manages to write very catchy and captivating songs, but this time, from the cauldron of her influences, she has preferably drawn from ABBA, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Celine Dion, Kelly Clarkson, as well as from Queen, Avril Lavigne and Gwen Stefani, and much less from the Korn. Don't be surprised if, listening to Hold the Girl, you find yourself thinking "where have I heard this before?": it's completely normal, Sawayama's music is a sort of mash up pop, with lyrics that try to be a minimum committed, such as his LGBTQ + activism.
