Boy from Michigan - John Grant (2021)
Il quinto album di John Grant, artista che apprezzo moltissimo, è se possibile ancor più "sperimentale" dei precedenti, mantenendo un livello delle liriche altissimo come suo solito. La sua ironia ficcante, unita alla sua capacità di dipingere "vignette" di vita quotidiana da provincia statunitense interrotte dal suo rimorso per essersi dichiarato (gay) troppo tardi e dai demoni che lo assillano, è qui al servizio della solita delicatissima e capace scrittura musicale; le tracce molto spesso fanno uso più dei sintetizzatori che del piano, e quello mi piace un po' meno ma dona al tutto un tono ancor più ironico e destabilizzante. Magari nella sua interezza non è esattamente il suo disco che preferisco, ma confermo che è un artista che vale la pena seguire.
The fifth album by John Grant, an artist that I appreciate very much, is if possible even more "experimental" than the previous ones, maintaining a very high level of lyrics as usual. His insightful irony, combined with his ability to paint "vignettes" of everyday life in the US provincial, interrupted by his remorse for having declared himself (gay) too late and by the demons that haunt him, is here at the service of the usual delicate and capable songwriting; the tracks very often make use of synthesizers more than the piano, and I like that a little less but it gives the whole an even more ironic and destabilizing tone. Maybe in the entirety of him it is not exactly my favorite record, but I confirm that he is an artist worth following.
