I Lie Here Buried With My Rings and My Dresses - Backxwash (2021)

30 anni, nata (uomo) a Lusaka, Zambia, Ashanti Mutinta aka Backxwash comincia a rappare prima di trasferirsi in British Columbia, Canada, per gli studi di informatica. Dopo la laurea si stabilisce a Montreal, comincia ad esibirsi dal vivo, pubblica i due EP F.R.E.A.K.S. e Black Sailor Moon nel 2018, e più o meno in quel periodo si identifica come transgender. Prima di questo I Lie Here Buried with My Rings and My Dresses, uscito nel giugno 2021, pubblica anche altri due album, Deviancy (2019) e God Has Nothing to Do with This Leave Him Out of It (2020; con questo vince il Polaris Music Prize), e un EP, Stigmata (2020). Oltre all'hip hop, è ispirata dall'heavy metal e dal post-rock, cita e campiona dai Black Sabbath ai Godspeed You! Black Emperor, ed il risultato è un rap metal durissimo, sperimentale, che possiamo avvicinare alle ultime cose di Ghostemane, ma che conserva tra le righe qualcosa di tribale. Aiutandosi con molte collaborazioni underground, l'atmosfera che se ne ricava è teatrale e quasi horror. Interessante.
