Covers - Cat Power (2022)

Ottavo album in studio per Charlyn Marie "Chan" Marshall, terzo disco di cover. Non c'è nulla di male, sappiamo già che Cat Power sa scrivere belle canzoni, non c'è bisogno di giustificazioni; lei stessa però, dice che sono entrati in studio con la sua band, e per rilassarsi hanno cominciato a suonare cover, e la cosa è venuta da sé. In realtà c'è pure un rifacimento di un suo pezzo di The Greatest, Hate, qua re-intitolato Unhate. Certo, siamo lontani dalle cover impersonali di belle canzoni, anche storiche, che purtroppo ci capita spesso di ascoltare, anche da grandi band. Qua siamo di fronte ad un talento smisurato, che entra dentro le tracce, le disintegra e le fa sue, stravolgendo perfino il senso delle liriche stesse (andatevi a rileggere la recensione del precedente Wanderer, per capire cosa intendo). Insomma, se ci siamo capiti bene, altrimenti ascoltatevelo.

There is nothing wrong with that, we already know that Cat Power can write good songs, there is no need for justifications; but she herself says that they went into the studio with her band, and to relax they started playing covers, and it came by itself. In reality there is also a remake of a piece of her from The Greatest, Hate, here re-titled Unhate. Of course, we are far from impersonal covers of beautiful songs, even historical ones, which unfortunately we often hear, even from great bands. Here we are faced with an immeasurable talent, which enters the tracks, disintegrates them and makes them her own, even distorting the meaning of the lyrics themselves (go and reread the review of the previous Wanderer, to understand what I mean). In short, if we understand each other correctly, good, otherwise listen to it.
