L.I.T.A.N.I.E.S. - Nicholas Lens (2020)
Nicholas Lens Noorenbergh is a Belgian composer of contemporary opera music and soundtracks, here on his second collaboration with Nick Cave, which seems to be unstoppable in his work, after Shell Shock in 2014, which premiered at La Monnaie in Brussels. This L.I.T.A.N.I.E.S. it comes out for the Deutsche Grammophone, and is labeled a trance-minimal chamber opera. Cave is the author of the libretto in English. Twelve litanies, which the author himself confesses he did not know what they were before Lens asked him to write them, and which he then developed almost exactly as if they were religious, dealing with the "birth, blooming, fracturing and rebirth of a human being—petitions to a divine maker demanding some sort of cosmic acknowledgement". The composer's music is obviously tending towards classic, but with a modern and indeed minimal approach. Alternation between nursery rhymes and ambient noise, at times quite evocative.
