Seminar VIII: Light of Meaning + Seminar IX: Darkness of Being - Old Man Gloom (2020)

Ottavo e nono album, come suggeriscono i titoli, per il supergruppo nato nel New Mexico ma poi stabilitosi a Boston, formato attualmente da Santos Montano alla batteria, Aaron Turner chitarra e voce, Nate Newton chitarra e voce, e da Stephen Brodsky al basso e voce, quest'ultimo subentrato al posto del defunto e rimpianto anche in questo caso, Caleb Scofield. Da buontemponi quali sono, la band ha fatto uscire prima il IX e dopo il VIII. Due dischi che possono, a mio giudizio, essere senza dubbio accomunati, perché ugualmente pregni della sperimentalità e della pesantezza che contraddistingue (anche) questo progetto. In maniera spesso molto simile ai SUMAC, non per niente un altro progetto di Turner, gli OMG si lasciano andare a lunghe digressioni psichedelico-sperimentali, per poi picchiare in maniera durissima, e intervallare tutto con momenti che oserei definire riflessivo-onirico-melodici (che possono durare fino ad oltre 5 minuti, come la prima parte della splendida Calling You Home). Come spesso capita, dunque, si possono riconoscere i contributi dei vari componenti, che naturalmente portano il loro bagaglio, il loro stile, e questo ci regala una coppia di dischi al tempo stesso pesantissimi, impegnativi, ma contenenti diverse perle post-metal.

Eighth and ninth albums, as the titles suggest, for the supergroup born in New Mexico but then settled in Boston, currently formed by Santos Montano on drums, Aaron Turner on guitar and vocals, Nate Newton on guitar and vocals, and Stephen Brodsky on bass and voice, the latter took over in the place of the deceased and regretted, also in this case, Caleb Scofield. As prankers as they are, the band released IX first and VIII after. Two records that can, in my opinion, undoubtedly be united, because they are equally full of the experimentation and heaviness that (also) distinguishes this project. In a way often very similar to SUMAC, not another Turner project for nothing, OMG indulge in long psychedelic-experimental digressions, and then hit hard, and intersperse everything with moments that I would dare to define reflective-dreamy-melodic (which can last up to over 5 minutes, like the first part of the splendid Calling You Home). As often happens, therefore, you can recognize the contributions of the various components, who naturally bring their baggage, their style, and this gives us a couple of records that are at the same time very heavy, demanding, but containing different post-metal pearls.
