Preacher's Daughter - Ethel Cain (2022)

Il primo di tre dischi dell'anno passato, sui quali sono stato sollecitato a scrivere da un amico e compagno di concerti, è quello che mi è piaciuto di più. Tenendo conto che è un debutto, è impressionante. È un concept album "incentrato sul personaggio di Ethel Cain, che scappa di casa solo per incontrare una fine raccapricciante per mano di uno psicopatico cannibale". Si, perché il nome dell'artista è un nome di finzione, adottato da Hayden Silas Anhedönia, donna trans (quasi incredibile, ascoltandone la voce) figlia di un diacono della Southern Baptist Convention (da qui il titolo). Un disco che ha il solo difetto di essere troppo lungo. Un calderone bruciante ed eterogeneo, dove Ethel dimostra di saper suonare qualsiasi genere: death gospel, trip hop, quello di Lana Del Rey, oppure perfino quello di Taylor Swift (sono abbastanza sicuro che Swifty le invidi tantissimo American Teenager, che Rolling Stone ha incluso nella sua lista delle canzoni LGBTQ più ispiratrici di tutti i tempi), americana, alt-pop, folk, goth, davvero, qualsiasi cosa. Un disco variegato e dall'atmosfera intrigante. Un grande debutto.

The first of three albums from last year, which I was urged to write about by a friend and concert partner, is the one I liked the most. Taking into account that it's a debut, that's impressive. It is a concept album "centered around the character Ethel Cain, who runs away from home only to meet a gruesome end at the hands of a cannibalistic psychopath". Yes, because the artist's name is a fictional name, adopted by Hayden Silas Anhedönia, a trans woman (almost incredible, listening to her voice) daughter of a deacon of the Southern Baptist Convention (hence the title). A disc that has the only flaw of being too long. A burning and heterogeneous cauldron, where Ethel proves that she can play any genre: death gospel, trip hop, Lana Del Rey's, or even Taylor Swift's (I'm pretty sure Swifty envies her a lot American Teenager, which Rolling Stone included on its list of the most inspirational LGBTQ songs of all time), Americana, alt-pop, folk, goth, really, anything. A varied disc with an intriguing atmosphere. A great debut.
