Giudizio sintetico: si può vedere (3,5/5)
Il film si apre nel 1909 (sebbene Pat Garrett sia stato ucciso nel 1908), vicino a Las Cruces, nel New Mexico. Garrett sta cavalcando con uomini che lavorano per il Santa Fe Ring, quando cade in un'imboscata e viene ucciso a freddo dai suoi soci, incluso un certo John W. Poe. Nel 1881 a Old Fort Sumner, New Mexico, William H. Bonney, noto come Billy the Kid, passa il tempo con gli amici sparando ai polli per divertimento. Un vecchio amico di Billy, Pat Garrett, arriva in città con il vice sceriffo JW Bell e si unisce al passatempo. Più tardi, bevendo qualcosa, Garrett informa Billy che l'elettorato lo vuole fuori dal paese e che tra cinque giorni, quando diventerà sceriffo della contea di Lincoln, farà partire Billy.
Altro film che Peckinpah si ritrovò a dirigere "in corsa", in sostituzione di Monte Hellman e coinvolto da James Coburn (qui eccezionale nei panni di Pat Garrett), non è esattamente pregno dei normali parametri peckinpahiani, ma è sostenuto da un grande cast e da un'atmosfera al tempo stesso moderna e western, iscrivendosi a modo suo nel genere revisionistico (appunto) del western.
Another film that Peckinpah found himself directing "on the run", replacing Monte Hellman and involved by James Coburn (here exceptional in the role of Pat Garrett), is not exactly imbued with the normal Peckinpahian parameters, but is supported by a great cast and gives an atmosphere that is both modern and western, subscribing in its own way to the revisionist genre (precisely) of the western.
