Persona Non Grata - Exodus (2021)

Gli Exodus sono una di quelle band della prima ondata del thrash metal che non hanno mai avuto il giusto riconoscimento. La loro storia poi, illustra che non sono stati troppo fortunati (innumerevoli cambi di formazione, qualche morto, storie di droga, e diversi membri molto capaci costretti ad essere riconosciuti come grandi musicisti solo perché "prestati" ad altre band). Eppure, nonostante tutto, dopo 42 anni dalla loro formazione, e 36 dal loro primo disco, eccoli qui (con uno solo superstite della formazione originale, l'immenso batterista Tom Hunting) con il loro undicesimo lavoro in studio, dal titolo (ammiccante) Persona Non Grata. Ed è come se questi ultimi 40 anni non fossero passati: dodici tracce per un'ora di musica che non è altro se non il classico thrash metal, che ai bei tempi ci faceva ondeggiare, sognare, sfogare. E, sarò molto onesto, anche se so di risultare nostalgico e pure un po' rincoglionito (perché in altri casi ho detto il contrario), suonato dagli Exodus, non mi sembra neppure troppo fuori dal tempo.

Exodus are one of those first-wave thrash metal bands that never got the right recognition. Their story then illustrates that they weren't too lucky (countless line-up changes, some deaths, drug stories, and several very capable members forced to be recognized as great musicians just because they were "loaned" to other bands). Yet, despite everything, 42 years after their formation, and 36 since their first record, here they are (with only one survivor of the original lineup, the immense drummer Tom Hunting) with their eleventh studio work, entitled (winking) Persona Non Grata. And it is as if these last 40 years had not passed: twelve tracks for an hour of music that is nothing but the classic thrash metal, which in the good old days made us sway, dream, let off steam. And, I'll be very honest, even if I know I'm nostalgic and even a bit stoned (because in other cases I said the opposite), played by Exodus, it doesn't even seem too out of time.
