Luminol - Midwife (2021)
Terzo album a nome Midwife, uno dei progetti di Madeline Johnston, che lei stessa ha definito heaven metal. Trasferitasi da Denver, Colorado, al New Mexico, ha chieso una mano per gli strumenti a Zachary Cole Smith e Colin Caulfield dei DIIV e a Flenser Dan Barrett degli Have a Nice Life per (come la descrive Pitchfork) "un'imbottitura extra di chitarra e batteria". Il disco è piuttosto breve, sei tracce per 33 minuti, e devo dire che l'etichetta prima citata ci sta tutta. Non è propriamente shoegaze, non ci sono droni (quelli li usa nel suo altro progetto Sister Grotto), e il metal sboccia qua e là ogni tanto. La voce soffice di Johnston è costantemente filtrata, le atmosfere sono rarefatte e sognanti. Il risultato è molto bello.

Moving from Denver, Colorado, to New Mexico, she asked DIIV's Zachary Cole Smith and Colin Caulfield and Have a Nice Life's Flenser Dan Barrett for (as Pitchfork describes it) "an extra padding of guitar and drums". The disc is quite short, six tracks for 33 minutes, and I must say that the label mentioned above is all there. It's not really shoegaze, there are no drones (she uses those in her other Sister Grotto project), and metal blooms here and there every now and then. Johnston's soft voice is constantly filtered, the atmospheres are rarefied and dreamy. The result is very beautiful.
