Revolutionary Love - Ani DiFranco (2021)

Ventesimo album per Angela Maria DiFranco (da Buffalo, New York, 50 anni lo scorso settembre) per una carriera ormai ultratrentennale, fatta di militanza, di indipendenza, durante la quale si è costruita un cammino personale, lontano dalle classifiche e dal mainstream; nonostante ciò, ha acquisito una certa popolarità negli US, e da noi pure, anche se potremmo definirla di nicchia. Revolutionary Love è un disco in bilico tra jazz e folk, ma dentro c'è di tutto escludendo l'hard rock: funky, RNB, soul classico, swing, qualche arrangiamento alla maniera dei crooner, il tutto condito da liriche di livello superiore. E' curioso il fatto che in alcuni passaggi, la si potrebbe scambiare per Erykah Badu. Non è certo la mia tazza di tè, ma giù il cappello e massimo rispetto.

Twentieth album for Angela Maria DiFranco (from Buffalo, New York, 50 last September) for a career now over thirty years, made of militancy, of independence, during which she has built a personal path, away from the charts and the mainstream; despite this, it has acquired a certain popularity in the US, and by us as well, even if we could define it (her popularity) as of niche. Revolutionary Love is a record in the balance between jazz and folk, but inside there is everything except hard rock: funky, RNB, classic soul, swing, some arrangements in the manner of crooners, all seasoned with higher level lyrics. It is curious that in some passages, she could be mistaken for Erykah Badu. Certainly not my cup of tea, but hat off and utmost respect.
