Cairn - Mizmor (2019)

Terzo album per la one man band di Portland, Oregon, il cui unico componente si cela dietro alla sigla A.L.N., e che ha scelto, per il nome della band, la parola che significa "salmo" in ebraico. Il disco si apre con una traccia, Desert of Absurdity, che inizialmente potrebbe spiazzare l'ascoltatore: un arpeggio di chitarra classica, e a seguire circa quattro minuti di death metal grezzo e vagamente nord europeo. Ma, dalla metà della traccia in poi, per proseguire anche nelle altre tre tracce del disco, ecco un death che sconfina nel doom / sludge, lentissimo, cadenzato, intriso di sofferenza, dove anche la voce, già rantolante, diventa a volta gutturale, in simbiosi con il dipinto di copertina, Time Immemorial del pittore polacco Mariusz Lewandowski. So che molti appassionati di musica ancora non riescono a comprendere, ma c'è un'eleganza perversa in questo genere musicale, e Mizmor ne ha da vendere.

Third album for the one man band from Portland, Oregon, whose only component is hidden behind the acronym A.L.N., and which has chosen, for the name of the band, the word that means "psalm" in Hebrew. The album opens with a track, Desert of Absurdity, which may initially surprise the listener: a classical guitar arpeggio, followed by about four minutes of raw and vaguely Northern European death metal. But, from the middle of the track onwards, to continue in the other three tracks of the disc, here is a death metal that borders on doom / sludge, very slow, rhythmic, steeped in suffering, where even the voice, already gaspling, becomes guttural at times, in symbiosis with the cover painting, Time Immemorial by the Polish painter Mariusz Lewandowski. I know many music fans still can't understand, but there is a perverse elegance to this genre of music, and Mizmor has it to sell.
