Carnage - Nick Cave & Warren Ellis (2021)

Uno dei tanti album usciti "a sorpresa", figli del lockdown conseguente alla pandemia da COVID19, è l'ennesimo disco di Nicholas Edward Cave, qua con un nuovo marchio, il suo nome e quello dell'ormai collaboratore di lunga data Warren Ellis. Otto tracce, musicalmente un po' meno scarne rispetto al precedente Ghosteen ma non distanti, meno ambient ma dentro tutto il resto già presente, sempre con eleganza e parsimonia, per lasciare il giusto spazio ad un Nick Cave sempre più ispirato, evocativo, con un alternanza di tracce che ora echeggiano, in modo "scremato" e modernizzato, i Bad Seeds di fine '80 inizio '90 (White Elephant), ora quello delle grandi ballate degli anni seguenti (Carnage, Albuquerque), inglobando, riutilizzando e rilavorando tutte le esperienze di tutti questi anni (e qua stiamo passando dall'analisi musicale a quella lirica). Dalla teatralità al romanticismo con tocchi di surrealismo mistico, quest'uomo, oggi supportato da un collaboratore musicalmente geniale, travalica ogni barriera musicale ancora una volta, e ci regala un altro disco che lascia senza parole e senza aggettivi. Non possiamo niente, se non dirgli grazie.

One of the many "surprise" albums released, children of the lockdown following the COVID19 pandemic, is yet another album by Nicholas Edward Cave, here with a new brand, his name and that of the now long-time collaborator Warren Ellis. Eight tracks, musically a little less gaunt than the previous Ghosteen but not distant, less ambient but inside everything else already present, always with elegance and parsimony, to leave the right space for an increasingly inspired, evocative Nick Cave with a alternation of tracks that now echo, in a "skimmed" and modernized way, the Bad Seeds of the late '80s / early' 90s (White Elephant, Hand of God), now that of the great ballads of the following years (Carnage, Albuquerque), incorporating, reusing and reworking all the experiences of all these years (and here we are passing from musical analysis to lyric analysis). From theatricality to romanticism with touches of mystical surrealism, this man, today supported by a musically brilliant collaborator, crosses every musical barrier once again, and gives us another record that leaves us speechless and without adjectives. We can do nothing but thank him.
