Ottavo disco in studio per il collettivo tedesco, seconda parte del concept incentrato sull'eone temporale fanerozoico [quello corrente, iniziato 542 milioni di anni fa circa; gli eoni si suddividono poi in ere (ad esempio quelle citate dopo, nel titolo, la mesozoica e la cenozoica), periodi, epoche], l'ennesimo disco davvero massiccio, potente, aggressivo ma con un'eleganza che rasenta quella dei Tool. Le assonanze non finiscono qui, ce ne sono e le troverete anche a livello prettamente musicale, le differenze stanno però nelle liriche, qui filosofeggianti, e nell'alternanza di cantato pulito e urlato (che solitamente segna e delimita anche il livello di aggressività del momento), e in un complesso decisamente più solare e meno cupo (sempre rispetto a quello dei Tool). Disco dal suono eccezionale, dalle atmosfere avvolgenti, tracce dalle durate varie, a volte relativamente brevi a volte molto lunghe, qua e là l'uso di strumenti inusuali per il metal, nel complesso la solita padronanza tecnica. Ospiti Jonas Renkse dei Katatonia (Jurassic / Cretaceous) e Tomas Hallbom dei Breach (Palaeocene), quest'ultimo ormai presenza fissa. Il post metal (con tutte le influenze che si porta dietro) in una delle sua massime espressioni.
Eighth studio album for the German collective, second part of the concept centered on the Phanerozoic temporal aeon [the current one, started about 542 million years ago; the aeons are then divided into eras (for example those mentioned later, in the title, the Mesozoic and the Cenozoic), periods, epochs], yet another truly massive, powerful, aggressive record but with an elegance that borders on that of Tool. The assonances do not end here, there are some and you will also find them on a purely musical level, the differences however lie in the lyrics, in some way philosophical here, and in the alternation of clean and shouted singing (which usually marks and also defines the level of aggressiveness of the moment), and in a decidedly more sunny and less gloomy ensemble (again compared to that of Tool). Exceptional sounding album, enveloping atmospheres, tracks of various durations, sometimes relatively short sometimes very long, here and there the use of unusual instruments for metal, on the whole the usual technical mastery. Guests Jonas Renkse of Katatonia (Jurassic / Cretaceous) and Tomas Hallbom of Breach (Palaeocene), the latter now a regular presence. Post metal (with all the influences it brings with it) in one of its greatest expressions.
