L'uscita del quattordicesimo disco in studio dei canadesi del Quebec giunge con una notizia non buona, e cioè quella dell'abbandono del batterista Oli Beaudoin, vi assicuro davvero impressionante dal vivo (e vi confesso che ho cominciato ad ascoltarli perché dovevo vederli live, lo scorso dicembre, erano gli Headliner dell'Headbangers Ball a Monaco di Baviera), ma tutto sommato, sono sicuro che i Kataklysm sopravviveranno, essendo James Payne, il nuovo, l'ottavo batterista della loro lunga carriera (si sono formati nel 1991). Il loro è, attualmente e da un po' di tempo, un death metal melodico che rispetta tutti i canoni del genere, e al tempo stesso non nascondo, bensì fa tesoro, delle influenze accumulate anche in gioventù. Essendo una band molto tecnica, conservano dei momenti di blast beat forsennato (l'inizio di Defiant), ma indulgono molto di più del passato sui mid tempos; sono capaci di scrivere ottime melodie, occhieggiano sia al thrash della bay area, sia al death metal nord europeo, sia alla NWOBHM. Sono degli onestissimi "lavoratori", e si divertono a fare quello che fanno. Il disco è valido, e nonostante gli anni di militanza, nel loro genere sono ancora tra i migliori.
The release of the fourteenth studio album by the Canadians from Quebec comes with bad news, namely that of the abandonment of drummer Oli Beaudoin, I assure you really impressive live (and I confess that I started listening to them because I had to see them live, last December, they were the Headliners of the Headbangers Ball in Munich), but all in all, I'm sure Kataklysm will survive, being James Payne, the new, the eighth drummer of their long career (they formed in 1991). Theirs is, currently and for some time, a melodic death metal that respects all the canons of the genre, and at the same time does not hide, but treasures, the influences accumulated even in his youth. Being a very technical band, they retain some frenzied blast beat moments (the beginning of Defiant), but they indulge much more than the past on mid tempos; they are capable of writing excellent melodies, they look, at the same time, at bay area thrash, as well as at north european death metal, and at NWOBHM. They are very honest "workers", and they enjoy doing what they do. The album is valid, and despite the years of militancy, in their genre they are still among the best.
