Empire of the Blind - Heathen (2020)

Pochi di voi ricorderanno questa band, che ebbe origine nel 1984 e debuttò nel 1987 con un disco straordinario, Breaking the Silence, un bellissimo ibrido tra il thrash della Bay Area e la NWOBHM (che tra l'altro, conteneva una cover degli Sweet, Set Me Free, una band molto sottovalutata, esattamente come loro). Con mia sorpresa ho recentemente scoperto che si sono riformati nel 2001, e che avevano pure pubblicato un terzo album nel 2009. Sono ancora attivi, e di recente hanno pubblicato questo Empire of the Blind. Il loro stile non è molto cambiato degli esordi, e come mi è capitato di dirvi, ai tempi era esattamente il tipo di musica che avrei voluto suonare (ci ho provato, per un po' di tempo). Adesso suona ovviamente datato, ma farà felice i nostalgici. La voce di David White (ai tempi conosciuto come David Godfrey) è ancora molto bella (la cosa li differenziava da molte altre thrash band), e la tecnica del chitarrista, nonché unico superstite della formazione originale, Lee Altus, affiancato da uno dei nuovi arrivati Kragen Lum [nello strumentale A Fine Red Mist ci sono addirittura tre ospiti: Gary Holt (Exodus, Slayer), Rick Hunolt (Exodus) e Doug Piercy (ex degli stessi Heathen)] alle chitarre, è sempre super. Altro limite del disco, i suoni, anche quelli molto simili a 30 anni fa.



Few of you will remember this band, which originated in 1984 and debuted in 1987 with an extraordinary record, Breaking the Silence, a beautiful hybrid between Bay Area thrash and NWOBHM (which by the way featured a cover of Sweet, Set Me Free, a very underrated band, just like them). To my surprise I recently discovered that they reformed in 2001, and that they also released a third album in 2009. They are still active, and recently released this Empire of the Blind. Their style hasn't changed much since the beginning, and as I happened to tell you, at the time it was exactly the kind of music I wanted to play (I tried, for a while). Now it obviously sounds dated, but it will make nostalgics happy. The voice of David White (known at the time as David Godfrey) is still very beautiful (which differentiated them from many other thrash bands), and the technique of the guitarist, and only survivor of the original lineup, Lee Altus, flanked by one of the new arrived Kragen Lum [in the instrumental A Fine Red Mist there are even three guests: Gary Holt (Exodus, Slayer), Rick Hunolt (Exodus) and Doug Piercy (ex of the same Heathen)] to guitars, it's always super. Another limit of the album, the sounds, even those very similar to 30 years ago.
