Seek Shelter - Iceage (2021)

Il quinto disco della band di Copenhagen potrebbe sorprendere chi, come me, li ha seguiti poco e si trova solo adesso ad approfondire; eppure, che la Scandinavia in generale, abbia rappresentato spesso una sorta di isola felice a livello musicale, è ben chiaro a me e a molti altri appassionati di suoni duri. Attenzione, però, gli Iceage sono lontani da death metal e affini: dopo un paio di minuti dell'iniziale Shelter Song, la prima cosa che mi viene in mente è la freschezza dei mai abbastanza rimpianti The (International) Noise Conspiracy. Freschezza giustificata, nel caso degli Iceage, da un'età media giusto sotto i 30 anni, seppure il suono e le influenze affondino non più solo nel post punk, ma pure nel classic rock e perfino, come notano i critici veri, nel britpop: qualcuno ha scomodato nomi altisonanti, come Pogues, Replacements, addirittura Velvet Underground e Rolling Stones. Ma è tutto vero: c'è una maturità compositiva sorprendente in queste nove tracce, c'è sensualità, sfacciataggine, voglia di sperimentare su basi rock solide, e di omaggiare (appunto) grandi maestri, divertendosi.

The fifth album of the Copenhagen band might surprise those who, like me, have not followed them a lot and only now are deepening; yet, that Scandinavia in general has often been a kind of "happy island" on a musical level, is very clear to me and many other hard-sound enthusiasts. Attention, however, Iceage are far from death metal and the like: after a couple of minutes of the initial Shelter Song, the first thing that comes to mind is the freshness of the never enough regrets The (International) Noise Conspiracy. Freshness justified, in the case of Iceage, from an average age just below 30, although the sound and influences sink not only in post punk, but also in classic rock and even, as real critics note, in britpop: someone has bothered with high-sounding names, such as Pogues, Replacements, even Velvet Underground and Rolling Stones. But it's all true: there is a surprising compositional maturity in these nine tracks, there is sensuality, cheekiness, the desire to experiment on solid rock bases, and to pay homage (in fact) to great masters, while having fun.
