Dies Occidendum - DJ Muggs the Black Goat (2021)

Lawrence Muggerud, conosciuto dai più come DJ Muggs, è un tipo che, se volessimo fare un paragone calcistico, ha sempre fatto un lavoro da centrocampista di quantità, perché gli viene dato poco credito: il paragone sarebbe errato, perché è uno che lavora nell'ombra, ma il suo apporto è anche qualitativo. E' suo gran parte del merito per l'aver creato un inconfondibile suono, per i Cypress Hill, ma come produttore, è dietro al successo degli House of Pain, qualche anno fa, come pure dei Die Antwoord, in tempi più recenti. Il punto è che se ascoltate questo Dies Occidendum, suo settimo disco solista (a nome DJ Muggs the Black Goat), riconoscerete quel marchio di fabbrica, e anche qualche atmosfera trip hop tipica del suono di Tricky, un altro col quale ha collaborato, e capirete che questo è uno che sa. Freddo, claustrofobico, inquietante, affascinante.

Lawrence Muggerud, known by the most as DJ Muggs, is a guy who, if we wanted to make a football comparison, has always done a job as a quantity midfielder, because he is given little credit: the comparison would be wrong, because he is someone who works in the shadow, but its contribution is also qualitative. Much of the credit is to him for creating an unmistakable sound for Cypress Hill, but as a producer, he is behind the success of House of Pain a few years ago, as well as Die Antwoord, in more recent times. The point is that if you listen to this Dies Occidendum, his seventh solo album (under the name DJ Muggs the Black Goat), you will recognize that trademark, and also some trip hop atmosphere typical of the Tricky sound, another one with which he collaborated, and you will understand that this is one who knows. Cold, claustrophobic, disturbing, fascinating.
