Vital - Big Brave (2021)

Dovrebbe essere il quinto album, questo Vital, per il trio quebecoise di Montreal, che di recente è diventato a maggioranza femminile, con l'ingresso alla batteria di Tasy Hudson. Il ritorno, a tra anni di distanza dal precedente A Gaze Among Them, è di quelli che possono lasciare il segno. Cinque tracce per meno di 40 minuti di musica, pesante come un incudine, possente come ultimamente solo il post rock sperimentale sa fare (mi vengono in mente i Sumac, ma qualcuno li avvicina ai Godspeed You! Black Emperor, altri addirittura ai Sunn O))) con i quali hanno condiviso il palco anni addietro), un tipo di musica che porta in qualche modo all'introspezione. Accompagnata da liriche non banali (il testo di Half Breed si ispira agli scritti del poeta statunitense Alexander Chee quando parla di discriminazione verso le persone di "razza mista"), scandite dalla voce dissonante, ma necessaria, della anche chitarrista Robin Wattie, Vital è senza dubbio l'album della consacrazione dei Big Brave. Il bacino d'utenza è quello che non riempie né gli stadi, né i palazzi dello sport, ma le emozioni che certa musica riesce a suscitare negli ascoltatori sono quelle vere, e non di plastica.

It should be the fifth album, this Vital, for the Quebec trio from Montreal, which recently became mostly female, with Tasy Hudson joining the drums. The return, three years after the previous A Gaze Among Them, is one that can leave its mark. Five tracks for less than 40 minutes of music, heavy as an anvil, powerful as lately only experimental post rock can do (Sumac comes to mind, but someone approaches them to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, others even to Sunn O))) with whom they shared the stage years ago), a type of music that somehow leads to introspection. Accompanied by non-trivial lyrics (the text of Half Breed is inspired by the writings of the American poet Alexander Chee when he speaks of discrimination against people of "mixed race"), marked by the dissonant but necessary voice of the guitarist Robin Wattie, Vital is undoubtedly the Big Brave consecration album. The catchment area is the one that does not fill the stadiums or the sports halls, but the emotions that some music manages to arouse in the listeners are the real ones, and not plastic ones.
