Ultrapop - The Armed (2021)

Il quarto album del collettivo anonimo proveniente da Detroit, Michigan, è una festa di colori e di suoni, un inno alla libertà stilistica, un caleidoscopio di rumori, melodie, generi, una figata pazzesca. A livello di nomi, sappiamo solo che alla batteria c'è Urian Hackney (Rough Francis ma qualche tempo fa nei Converge per sostituire Koller infortunato), e che sulla conclusiva The Music Becomes a Skull c'è un featuring di Mark Lanegan; possiamo anche dire che, dietro la mano del produttore ufficiale che è Dan Greene, c'è quella di Kurt Ballou, che qui funge da executive producer. Dodici tracce per meno di quaranta minuti di hardcore punk elettrico, una sorta di Death Grips o anche degli Ho99o9 ugualmente spigolosi ma ancora più melodici, in salsa mathcore. Ritmiche vertiginose (il lavoro della batteria e del basso è a tratti spaventoso, e potrebbe ricordare perfino i Mars Volta), elettronica durissima ma pure chitarre a volontà, cori e melodie seppure veloci, apprezzabili perfino da chi non ama la musica estrema, e assolutamente coinvolgenti. Una delle band più strane sulla piazza, un disco che si candida decisamente alle posizioni più alte di questo 2021.

The fourth album by the anonymous collective from Detroit, Michigan, is a party of colors and sounds, a hymn to stylistic freedom, a kaleidoscope of noises, melodies, genres, a crazy but really cool thing. At the level of names, we only know that on the drums there is Urian Hackney (Rough Francis but some time ago with Converge to replace injured Koller), and that on the conclusive The Music Becomes a Skull there is a featuring by Mark Lanegan; we can also say that, behind the hand of the official producer who is Dan Greene, there is that of Kurt Ballou, who here acts as executive producer. Twelve tracks for less than forty minutes of hardcore electric punk, a sort of Death Grips or even Ho99o9 equally edgy but even more melodic, in a mathcore sauce. Dizzying rhythms (the work of the drums and bass is frightening at times, and could even recall Mars Volta), very hard electronics but also guitars at will, choirs and melodies albeit fast, appreciable even by those who do not love extreme music, and absolutely engaging. One of the strangest bands on the square, an album that is definitely a candidate for the highest positions of this 2021.
