Godspeed - Glasvegas (2021)
Eccoli qua, gli scozzesi capitanati dal ragazzo che voleva essere Joe Strummer, James Allan, ex calciatore, voce e chitarra: stavolta addirittura ricalcano la celeberrima copertina di London Calling. Sono stati un po' fermi (il disco precedente, Later...When the TV Turns to Static, è del 2013), hanno cambiato la batterista (in realtà stanno ancora cercando; dopo Ryan Ross, batterista della formazione iniziale, dal 2003 al 2004, per cinque anni la titolare è stata Caroline McKay, vista in azione nel 2009, dopo di che per ben 10 anni il suo posto è stato occupato dalla svedese Jonna Löfgren, che a metà dell'anno passato ha abbandonato per troppi impegni contemporanei), ma sono ancora tra noi. La domanda è: come stanno? Dopo svariati ascolti, posso dirvi questo: non male. Non si sono mossi di una virgola, a livello stilistico, le loro composizioni sono strutturate come nel loro esordio di 13 anni fa (Glasvegas), e spesso, le emozioni che riescono a suscitare sono intense. Purtroppo, non ci sono vette estatiche, come in passato.
Here they are, the Scots led by the boy who wanted to be Joe Strummer, James Allan, former footballer, voice and guitar: this time they even "copy" the famous cover of London Calling. They've been a bit stuck (the previous record, Later ... When the TV Turns to Static, is from 2013), they've changed the drummer (actually they're still looking; after Ryan Ross, early line-up drummer, from 2003 to 2004, for five years the owner was Caroline McKay, seen in action in 2009, after which for 10 years her place was occupied by the Swedish Jonna Löfgren, who left in the middle of last year due to too many contemporary commitments), but they are still with us. The question is: how are they? After several listen, I can tell you this: not bad. They have not moved one comma, on a stylistic level, their compositions are structured as in their debut 13 years ago (Glasvegas), and often, the emotions they are able to arouse are intense. Unfortunately, there are no ecstatic peaks, as in the past.
