Norwegian Gothic - Årabrot (2021)

Nono album, dice qualcuno, forse decimo, per la creatura del poliedrico Kjetil Nernes (lo ribadisco, grande fan del cinema, dopo un minimale "scambio" di commenti su IG a proposito di Lord of the Flies, ne ho avuto un altro a proposito di Pablo Larraín), coadiuvato da Karin Park, del resto sono marito e moglie. Contributo non indifferente il suo, almeno credo, nella creazione e nella maturazione di un marchio di fabbrica davvero unico nel campo metal/rock/punk. Non è da molto che li seguo, ma sono già riusciti a spiazzarmi completamente, e quindi a guadagnarsi una simpatia speciale: questo Norwegian Gothic, ben sedici tracce per quasi un'ora di musica robusta, mi ha conquistato già dopo tre canzoni, ed un approccio totalmente diverso da quello che mi era parso di intuire in precedenza. Le influenze punk e perfino new wave escono tutte con prepotenza, imbastardite da chitarre sludge potentissime, un basso sfacciato che sorregge tutte le costruzioni musicali, per canzoni decisamente più dirette, che fanno breccia immediatamente, con l'uso di melodie accattivanti. La teatralità già messa in luce con i lavori precedenti si trasforma in un suono, appunto, vagamente gotico, innegabilmente affascinante. Non importa quale sia la vostra tazza di tè (musicale): sono abbastanza certo che questo disco degli Årabrot può piacere a chiunque riesca ad apprezzare minimamente suoni pesanti e attitudine non pop, con l'aggiunta di una serie di tracce tra le quali stenterete ad eleggere la vostra preferita. Dategli una chance, perché se la meritano.

Ninth album, someone says, maybe tenth, for the creature of the multifaceted Kjetil Nernes (I repeat it, big cinema fan, after a minimal "exchange" of comments on IG about Lord of the Flies, I had another one about it on Pablo Larraín), assisted by Karin Park, after all they are husband and wife. Her contribution, at least I believe, is not indifferent to the creation and maturation of a truly unique trademark in the metal/rock/punk field. I have not been following them for long, but they have already managed to completely blow me away, and therefore to earn a special sympathy: this Norwegian Gothic, sixteen tracks for almost an hour of robust music, won me over after three songs, and a totally different approach from what I seemed to have guessed previously. The punk and even new wave influences all come out with arrogance, bastardized by very powerful sludge guitars, a cheeky bass that supports all musical constructions, for decidedly more direct songs, which immediately break through, with the use of captivating melodies. The theatricality already highlighted with previous works is transformed into a vaguely Gothic sound, undeniably fascinating. No matter what your (musical) cup of tea is: I'm pretty sure this Årabrot record will appeal to anyone who can appreciate the least bit heavy sounds and non-pop attitude, with the addition of a number of tracks among which you will struggle to elect your favorite. Give them a chance, because they deserve it.
