Life on Earth - Hurray for the Riff Raff (2022)

Qua su fassbinder, siccome siamo dei giusti, seguiamo da qualche anno la band di Alynda Segarra, che risponde al buffo (ma pregnante) nome di Hurray for the Riff Raff. Oggi parliamo di quello che Wikipedia considera il settimo album, mentre Pitchfork sostiene essere l'ottavo, Life on Earth. E' un disco che, dopo molte sperimentazioni e crossover di generi, sembra, musicalmente, apparentemente più "normalizzato", seppure l'Americana degli HFTRR sia molto sui generis, e da qui la sua bellezza ibrida e mescolata; certo, una canzone come Life on Earth ci fa capire che la Segarra non è solo una che si veste in modo strano (vedi la copertina). Più che mai, sono le liriche che danno profondità al tutto: completamente schierata a fianco degli immigrati, dei poveri e dei cosiddetti diseredati, Segarra si fa portavoce di chi non ha voce, aiutandosi (scusate la ripetizione) con la voce di Ocean Vuong (su Nightqueen), e facendo proprie le lezioni di Woody Guthrie, ed anche quelle di Fiona Apple e Sharon Van Etten quando scende nei particolari degli abusi. Con Precious Cargo ci ricorda poi, che è capace di fare tutto, perfino trip hop. Chapeau.

Here on fassbinder, since we are cool, we have been following for some years the band of Alynda Segarra, which responds to the funny (but pregnant) name of Hurray for the Riff Raff. Today we talk about what Wikipedia considers the seventh album, while Pitchfork claims to be the eighth, Life on Earth. It is a record that, after many experiments and genre crossover, seems, musically, apparently more "normalized", even if the Americana of HFTRR is very sui generis, and hence its hybrid and mixed beauty; sure, a song like Life on Earth makes us understand that Segarra is not just someone who dresses strangely (see the cover). More than ever, it is the lyrics that give depth to the whole: completely lined up alongside immigrants, the poor and the lasts, Segarra becomes the spokesperson for those who have no voice, helping herself (sorry for the repetition) with the voice of Ocean Vuong (on Nightqueen), and making her own the lessons of Woody Guthrie, as well as those of Fiona Apple and Sharon Van Etten when she goes into the details of the abuse. With Precious Cargo she then reminds us that she is capable of doing everything, even trip hop. Chapeau.
