Terzo album per la band svizzera, e nel caso non lo avessi fatto con abbastanza forza in passato, devo sottolineare che attualmente, non c'è niente di più coraggioso e sfidante, in campo metal. Un cenno alle liriche, visto che in passato ne ho parlato solo in occasione dell'EP Wake of a Nation; il leader Manuel Gagneux ne parla così: "Dal punto di vista dei testi, Zeal & Ardor è una continuazione della narrativa della storia alternativa che abbiamo in corso - e se gli schiavi americani si fossero rivolti a Satana invece che a Dio? - Dove Devil Is Fine parlava della vita in cattività e Stranger Fruit riguardava la fuga, questo disco riguarda le molte cose che vengono dopo. Essere in fuga, rimuginazioni clandestine e grande piano." Musicalmente, proseguono nel tentativo di mettere insieme black metal e neo soul, passando attraverso il blackgaze, il death metal melodico, l'industrial metal, arrivando così a guadagnarsi l'etichetta di avant-garde metal e post tutto. Sinuoso, intricato, stuzzicante, sono questi i dischi che ci piacciono e ci fanno guardare al resto dei generi musicali con sospetto di stanchezza.

Third album for the Swiss band, and in case I haven't done it hard enough in the past, I must point out that currently, there is nothing more courageous and challenging in the metal field. A nod to the lyrics, since in the past I have only talked about them on the occasion of the EP Wake of a Nation; leader Manuel Gagneux talks about it like this: "Lyrically, it's a continuation of the alternate history narrative we have going on — what if American slaves had turned to Satan instead of God? —Where Devil Is Fine was about life in captivity and Stranger Fruit was about the escape this record is about the many things that come after. Being on the run, clandestine ruminations and grand plan." Musically, they continue in an attempt to put together black metal and neo soul, passing through blackgaze, melodic death metal, industrial metal, thus earning the label of avant-garde metal and post-everything. Sinuous, intricate, tantalizing, these are the records that we like and make us look at the rest of the musical genres with suspicion of fatigue.
