I Black Crown Initiate sono una band proveniente da Reading, Pennsylvania, qui al loro terzo album. La formazione, al momento sprovvista di un batterista stabile, vede Nick Shaw al basso, Ethan McKenna alla chitarra ritmica, James Dorton alla voce harsh, e Andy Thomas alla chitarra solista e alle parti vocali pulite. Questo Violent Portraits of Doomed Escape è un disco valido, non facilissimo da etichettare. Wikipedia ed altri recensori li mettono nella categoria progressive death metal, e direi che rendono abbastanza bene l'idea. Le tracce sono spesso più lunghe della media, elaborate e varie. Le parti progressive sono solitamente accompagnate dal cantato pulito, mentre ovviamente quelle death hanno il cantato in modalità harsh, creando un interessante altalena, ma al contrario di quanto si possa pensare immaginandosi una cosa del genere, l'amalgama funziona; per quanto concettualmente stridente, la cosa non è del tutto nuova, anzi, molte band già da tempo lavorano in questo modo, ed i BCI lo fanno a modo loro, piuttosto bene.

This Violent Portraits of Doomed Escape is a valid album, not very easy to label. Wikipedia and other reviewers put them in the progressive death metal category, and I'd say they get the idea pretty well. Tracks are often longer than average, elaborate and varied. The progressive parts are usually accompanied by the clean vocals, while obviously the death ones have the sung in harsh mode, creating an interesting swing, but contrary to what one might think by imagining such a thing, the amalgam works; although conceptually jarring, it is not entirely new, indeed, many bands have been working in this way for some time, and BCI do it their way, quite well.
